Die Hinrichtung von Sokrates durch das Athener Volk hat eine philosophische Reaktion ausgelöst, die die Grundlagen des westlichen Denkens bildete. Der Gedanke an Platon, ein Schüler des Sokrates, dominiert unser heutiges Verständnis der Welt; es hat nicht nur den Begriff des Stadtstaates, seine soziale Struktur oder den Begriff der Gerechtigkeit geprägt, sondern die Philosophie selbst als Streben und Liebe zur Wahrheit verstanden. Aber was ist die Wahrheit? Und wie können wir wissen, was wahr ist? Der Kurs bietet eine Einführung in die grundlegenden Fragen der Philosophie: Was gibt es? (Metaphysik); Woher wissen wir, was existiert (Epistemologie)? und zu welchem Zweck sollten wir Wissen über die Welt (Ethik) erlangen? Platons frühe Dialoge geben Einblicke in die Begriffe "Sein", "Wissen", "das Gute", "Schönheit", das Wesen der "Seele" sowie in die befreiende Macht der Philosophie.
The execution of Socrates by the people of Athens has triggered a philosophical reaction which constituted the foundations of Western thought. The thought of Plato, Socrates? disciple, dominants our contemporary understanding of the world; it has not only shaped the concept of the city-state, its social structure, or the notion of justice but conceived of philosophy itself as the pursuit and love of truth. But what is truth? And how can we know what is truthful? The course provides an introduction to the fundamental questions in philosophy: What exists? (Metaphysics); how do we know what exists (Epistemology)? and for what purpose should we attain knowledge of the world (Ethics)? Plato?s early dialogs provide insights into the notion of “being?, “knowledge?, “the good?, “beauty?, the nature of the “soul?, as well as into the liberating power of philosophy.
