You should bring excess materials from your everyday life, such as clothing or one-time use plastic such as produce bags/nets. If you can't bring enough material for a complete weaving project, no problem, the instructor will provide you with additional materials.
Together, we will learn how to wind a warp thread on the vertical frame loom, the basic technique of weaving, and how to remove the finished weaving from the frame.
The course offers a space for discussion about weaving traditions around the world and how the skill can be applied to address our common problem of excessive waste. Suitable for all ages. No previous creative experience is required.
The course instructor, upsi, is a fine artist who moved to Berlin from the USA in 2009 after completeing her studies at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Upsi works with charcoal drawing, painting, sculpture, and weaving, and through careful selection of materials and the teaching of sustainable creative processes, she combines her artistic exploration with environmental activism. From 2020 to 2024, upsi offered free and open weaving workshops at the Haus der Materialisierung. She currently teaches a specialist weaving project at the Kurt Tucholsky High School, various upcycling workshops through Kunst-Stoffe e.V., and open weaving at Syndikat.

You can purchase a frame from the course instructor, which she makes from reclaimed wood (50?70 cm. for ¤5). Alternatively, you can bring your own frame, which must be empty and stable. You can also weave on a frame with a partner.
After registering, please email upsi to indicate whether you would like to purchase a frame, whether you will bring your own frame (send a picture to check that it will function), or if you are attending the course with a partner and need to purchase one frame or you will bring a frame for you both.
