Beschreibung:

Explore the art of speculative fiction and write stories that defy the ordinary!

What to Expect:
The course is both an introduction to classic and contemporary milestones of (short) speculative fiction and a training room for your own writing skills, from drafting plots to fine-tuning your style. Speculative fiction is a broad category that includes Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Weird Fiction, as well as countless genre blends and sub-genres.

How It Works:
1. Reading
To explore the subtleties and foundations of speculative fiction, we'll combine close readings of selected passages of stylistic virtuosity with reading complete stories by champions of speculative fiction, such as Edgar Allen Poe, Angela Carter, Ted Chiang, and others. We?ll focus on short fiction for pragmatic reasons - but also because short fiction tends to be a hotbed of innovation and therefore the best place to study the many possibilities of a genre.

2. Writing
Fun and inspiring writing exercises will invite you to practice story-telling and expand your own stylistic range. You'll be imitating, transforming, adopting, and plotting, both in class and between sessions. Finally, you'll be able to share and discuss your own work, in a friendly and fair work-shopping session.

What You'll Learn:
After completing the course, you will
- know ground-breaking texts of speculative fiction
- read more attentively and efficiently
- recognize and adopt useful literary devices
- be better at story-telling
- write your own speculative fiction with confidence and ambition

Who This Is For:
The course is aimed at both novice and intermediate writers.
A B2 level of English is highly recommended.

Meet Your Instructor:
Dr. Michael Duszat is a scholar of English and German literature and has taught numerous courses and workshops on reading and writing fiction. His own reading journey began with fantasy and horror, and his fascination for everything weird has only grown during the years. In 2025, he was on the jury for the „PAN-Stipendium für phantastische Literatur.“ He has published stories, essays, poetry, and radio plays.

Core Concept:
Nothing beats studying what you love, figuring out how its done, and trying to do it better.
